PFS2012 Character Guest Post: Anna Rogan from Auracle + Giveaway

One of my most anticipated releases of this year was AURACLE by Gina Rosati. I mean, how often do you read about a girl who can astral project? The last time I had was in STRANGER WITH MY FACE by Lois Duncan, and I was scared crapless. And really entertained. I honestly don't know what to expect once I begin AURACLE, but I sure hope it's as amazing as it sounds! Today, I have Anna Rogan, who is the main character of AURACLE, here talking to us about the perfect guy.

The Perfect Guy
Sometimes I wonder if the U.S. government discovered that I could astrally project out of my body, would they try to recruit me to go spy on people? Can you imagine how scary that would be? And it’s not that I ever really spy on people, it’s more that I . . . people watch. But haven’t you ever done that? Like, just sat in the mall food court and watched the crowd hurry by. Whenever my mom drags me to the mall, I am that weird girl who would rather park her tush in the food court with a chicken chalupa and watch the people rather than shop.

Okay, maybe once or twice, I spied on someone. When I was about twelve, I had a crush on this teenage movie star (who will remain unnamed because now that I think about it, I don’t know what I saw in him). I knew he was filming a movie in New Zealand and I thought it would be fun to watch them film said movie, so I decided to go looking for him one night, which surprisingly, didn’t take that long to find him because they were all in this kind of remote area and it was hard to miss all the movie equipment out in the middle of nowhere.

Anyway, Hot Anonymous Movie Guy played a medieval archer in this fantasy movie (and it’s not who you think it is) so when I found him, he was practicing with a medieval-looking longbow and he was actually hitting the bullseye with some of the arrows, which impressed twelve year old me very much. He was off by himself by the edge of the woods, and he was in his costume, which made him look really good, and I remember thinking, this! This is the perfect guy! He’s handsome, he’s a movie star, he can hit a target with an arrow. It did not take much to impress me when I was twelve. And then … he paused, and he took a deep breath, and he hocked up a very loud, very chunky wad of phlegm, spat it, and no exaggeration, it landed five feet away.

And in that moment of complete and absolute grossness, I realized that nobody’s perfect. Not this pretty, shiny movie boy, not the kings and presidents of the world, not the doctors and teachers or kid who bags your lunch at McDonald’s … everyone is human.

Even Rei, my best friend who tries so very hard to please everyone and be smart and nice and understanding and super clean – even Rei is not perfect. It really is a paradox, isn’t it – nobody can really be a perfect person because perfection is an annoying quality when it comes to people – it’s intimidating and it makes the rest of us feel crappy about ourselves. And it’s weird, because if you flip through magazines, you see all these airbrushed models and everybody’s pretty and society puts celebrities up on pedestals, but then the tabloids are always headlining movie star faux pas and front-paging pictures of their cellulite, and I have to wonder why? To make the rest of us feel better about ourselves? Do people really care?

I think some people push themselves to be the best they can be, and some people are just comfortable being themselves. Either way, it’s life, but people get judgy. Yes, even me, I get judgy, which is why I’m always teasing Rei. But for me, the perfect guy is someone who knows me and loves me, flaws and all.
