Liz's Top Ten Favorite Fantasies

My Top Ten Favourite Fantasies
First of all, thanks so much to Asher (who is awesome) for letting me take part in her amazing event! I love fantasy, it’s one of my favourite genres (and I love retellings too!) so I was really excited to write a post! I decided to do a list of my favourite fantasies (as I’m kind of a list person), so here are my favourites so far:

1. Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling – obviously, this has to be on my list. I am a huge Harry Potter fan. HUGE. We had a Dumbledore’s Army at my old school, no joke. We even had OWLs and cupcakes iced with snitches. So yes, I am one of those sad Harry Potter fans that used pencils as wands in class and shouted “Expelliarmus!” to disarm my friends during Physics lessons. Ahh, those were the days. But seriously, Harry Potter has got to be one of the best fantasies. Who wouldn’t want to go to Hogwarts and visit Hogsmeade and maybe sneak into the Forbidden Forest? It’s such an appealing world with so many great characters...and I think Harry Potter will definitely always remain my favourite series.
2. The Demon’s Lexicon series by Sarah Rees Brennan – Nick Ryves. My favourite book boyfriend  ever. He may be a bit morally ambiguous, but he’s also just misunderstood! :P. TDL is an urban fantasy, and I love the setting. It’s modern day England, but demons and other creepy things exist as well and so you get the best of both worlds. I really love the Goblin Market too because the air is just so full of magic and there all kinds of sorcerers there. Plus the characters...I love Nick, Mae and Jamie SO MUCH. Jamie is especially hilarious. Definitely check out this series if you haven’t already!
3. The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare – WILL. JEM. TESSA. The most heartbreaking love triangle! Just thinking about these poor characters makes me sad. Things are so messed up. You have a guy who is in love with his dying best friend’s fiancĂ©e, a girl who might love both and another guy who’s just clueless as to how complicated everything really is. I am both desperate to read and yet dreading Clockwork Princess, because I know it’s going to destroy me. The setting is so cool though, Victorian London is always great to read about, and it’s extra-interesting because the main characters are Shadowhunters, so they don’t exactly lead your regular Victorian lives.
4. White Cat by Holly Black – Cassel, I think, is my favourite male character of all time. I mean, I love my book boyfriends, I really do, but Cassel...he’s just awesome. He’s funny, he’s honest, he’s realistic...how can you not love him? Plus the world and story of White Cat is so amazing. I love how Cassel slowly begins to unravel the mystery behind his family and curse-working, and the way magic is used is really different and stands out from the crowd. I haven’t finished this series yet (shame on me, I know) but if the rest of the books are anything like White Cat, then I know I’ll love them.
5. The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielson – Sage is up there with Cassel. He, too, is a fantastic main character. He had me laughing from the first page, his sarcasm was brilliant! Plus, the way he handled everything was commendable, I don’t think I would have lasted. The story behind the royal family was also fascinating and I liked reading the political motivations behind what was going on. I’m already so excited for the next book, because I need to know more about Sage and what will happen to him next! The False Prince is a brilliant fantasy because it has a bit of everything in it, and I couldn’t put it down!
6. Seraphina by Rachel Hartman – such a great take on dragons! I’ve always loved dragons but the ones in this book were very different to the other kinds I’d read about. I like how Seraphina got the best of both worlds, being half dragon and half human, and I liked seeing her reason her way through things were her mix of dragon/human logic! :P Plus, the romance in this book...sigh. I loved it. I really did. I’m sort of a sucker for forbidden love, but this was just extra awesome. I’m already desperate for the next book, I want to see how everything plays out!
7. The Assassin’s Curse by Cassandra Rose Clarke – Ananna is a fabulous heroine. A tough pirate with a hilarious sense of humour, you can’t help but like her and root for her. And Naji, well. What can I say. He is probably the least assassin-y assassin, but still pretty badass. He’s this broken sort of guy who’s kind of lost his way (but is too oblivious to notice that Ananna could help him find it again – notice her, damn you, notice!). And everything feels so...I don’t know. There’s so much magic and mystery in this book and I could really picture each place the two main characters visit because the descriptions were quite vivid. The kind of world I’d like to drop into, just for a day, to experience everything.
8. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas – erm, Celaena? She is one tough cookie. Okay, I will admit we didn’t get to see much of her awesome skills in this book, but what we did see shows that she is not a woman to be messed with. I liked that even though she was an assassin (you may have noticed I like books about assassins...), she had other interests too – she was an avid reader, liked attending balls and was actually quite sociable – her character really surprised me. I liked the whole competition too, and the way she got annoyed when she was told to hide her true ability (she liked showing off a bit :P). As for the love interests...I’m team Chaol ;).
9. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor – EVERYTHING. Everything about this book is wonderful. I don’t even know what else to say. Just trust me. READ IT NOW. You will LITERALLY be drawn in by the first line, it is that good.
10. Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa – Grimalkin! The coolest cat around. He’s probably my favourite character in the series (though I do love Ash and Puck too) – only a cat can have that kind of sense of humour :P. Hehe. The great thing about this series is how the ending of book three is sort of foreshadowed in book one. I didn’t notice at the time, but if you pay close attention, there are a lot of clues scattered across the series. I love Nevernever and all the scary and beautiful things within it. And The Iron Knight is so sad and yet probably my favourite book in the series.

And there you have it! My favourite fantasies! Honourable mentions: Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer, Sabriel by Garth Nix, The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis and Paranormalcy by Kiersten White.

Thanks so much again to Asher, and hope you enjoyed my post! :)
